Correctional health is the provision of healthcare services to prisoners.
Prisoners have very high rates of mental illness, substance abuse, AIDS,
and a wide range of other disorders. Most prisoners are soon released back into the
community. Correctional health services are sometimes very high in cost and/or very
low in quality. Security and transport of prisoners to and from community
health facilities for specialty services, surgery and hospitalization, are often
costly and sometimes difficult to manage. Finally, prisoners sometimes feign illness
because of boredom or anger, or can attempt to escape during transport.
